Using mosaic tiling in a contemporary space

Small tiles, big impact. Where mosaic earns its place.

Written by the Tile Style team, Preston

When designing a contemporary space, whether it’s commercial or domestic, a living room or bathroom, it’s important to choose the right tiles for the right visual and aesthetic results. Mosaic tiling can be a very effective option, but this is more closely associated with traditional design. So what should you consider when using mosaic tiling in a contemporary space? And how can you achieve the right visual results?

What are the important considerations when using mosaic tiling in a contemporary space?

There are a number of important considerations to take into account when choosing and applying mosaic tiles for a contemporary space. These considerations include:

  • Choosing the colours
  • Patterns and designs
  • The size of the tiles
  • Tile positioning

Choosing the right colours

One of the first factors to consider when using mosaic tiling for a contemporary space is the colour scheme. This is because the colour palette can play an important role in defining the appearance of a room. In contemporary design, natural, neutral tones are a popular option and this can be combined with bolder colours for a striking result. It’s important to bear in mind the existing colour schemes used in the room, or the colour scheme you intend to apply, and choose mosaic tiling that will complement this.

Neutral tones for mosaic tiling make for a subtle and effective result in a contemporary space, adding texture and visual interest without relying on colours. However, if you want to inject more personality into the space, vibrant or brighter colours can pair well with these neutral tones to make a mosaic tiling feature that adds visual depth and interest to the space, in line with the contemporary design principles.

Patterns and designs

Another important consideration for mosaic tiles in contemporary spaces is the pattern and design itself. Mosaic tiles can create striking patterns and images, though this is typically associated with more traditional design features. As a result, geometric or abstract patterns can be more effective for a contemporary space, using colours and tiling shape to define the overall pattern. By using geometric designs, you can add a sense of movement or dynamism that will allow your space to stand out, while still having a contemporary feel.

Tile size

Mosaic tiling is associated with small tiles that generally measure less than two inches. These bring intricate detail and charm, and can be used to create complex imagery. However, while this can be striking, particularly for feature tiling, this is an approach that is best suited to traditionally designed rooms. For a contemporary space, you will need to take a different approach.

Larger mosaic tiles that measure more than 3 inches can be a good option for a contemporary room. These are larger and chunkier, which makes it easier to create geometric and abstract patterns, with a more streamlined look that complements contemporary design.

Tile positioning

Finally, you will need to consider the tile positioning when using mosaic tiling in a contemporary space. The positioning itself can have a dramatic impact on the overall effect, and mosaic tiling is well known for its ability to draw the eye and create visual interest. This makes it the perfect option for feature wall tiling, and for spaces like shower walls, kitchen splashbacks and fireplace tiling.

However, mosaic tiling can also be used to achieve a more subtle effect, by interesting mosaic tiling in neutral tones into accents or borders. It’s important to achieve this effectively, while maintaining a contemporary approach to the design.
