How it works

The sums we use.

  1. 01
    Area
Length times width for each area, added together.
  2. 02
    Cuts and breakages
We add 10% for a straight lay, 12% for brick bond, 15% for herringbone or diagonal and 20% for large format, where more of each tile ends up as offcut.
  3. 03
    Adhesive
Based on the trowel you’d use for that tile size. Bigger tiles need a thicker, fuller bed, so they take more per square metre.
  4. 04
    Grout
Worked out from the joint width, tile size and a typical tile thickness, with 10% on top.

What it doesn't cover

Where a tiler earns their keep.

  • Doors, baths, kitchen units and anything else you won’t tile around. Take those off or you’ll over-order.
  • Borders, feature strips and mosaics. Measure those separately.
  • Pattern matching on patterned or book-matched tiles, which can need a lot more.
  • Primer, tanking, levelling compound, trims and silicone.
  • Uneven floors. Large format tiles on a floor that isn’t flat use more adhesive than this assumes.
