Layout options for living room floor tiles

Choosing a floor layout that suits the shape of the room.

Written by the Tile Style team, Preston

Tiles for the living room are durable, robust and easy to maintain, to keep your home looking great for the long term. However, choosing the right tiles, and tiling layout, is an important consideration for the overall style and design of your room. So what are the effective layout option for living room floor tiles? And how can you achieve the right result for your space?

So what are the effective layout option for living room floor tiles?

There are a number of layout options that can be very beneficial and effective for living room floor tiles. These include:

  • Modular layouts
  • Herringbone tiling
  • Brick layouts
  • Straight lay tiling
  • Basket weave designs

Modular layouts for living room floor tiles

A modular layout uses tiles of different sizes in a repeating arrangement. This can be highly effective for creating a more rustic or traditional look, and it works especially well with natural stone or stone-effect tiles. The varying sizes add texture and visual interest, making the floor a real feature without being too busy or overwhelming.

This layout is particularly well suited to larger living rooms, where the pattern will be able to repeat without being too cramped.

Herringbone tiling

Herringbone is a classic tiling layout that can suit both traditional and contemporary properties. It is created with tiles installed in a V-shaped, zig-zag pattern, often with timber effect tiles. This type of layout can help your living room feel more dynamic and bring character and charm. Because of the design of the layout, the pattern can actually make the room feel wider, as it draws the eye along the diagonal lines. Overall, it can be a great option for small and large living rooms of all design styles

Brick layouts for living room floor tiles

Also known as a running bond, the brick layout is simple but timeless. With this design layout, the tiles are laid like bricks in a wall, each row offset from the one above. This works especially well with rectangular tiles and gives a relaxed, slightly rustic feel. It’s also great at hiding imperfections in walls or tile edges, making it a good choice if you’re working with handmade or irregular tiles.

Straight lay tiling

This is the simplest and most common layout, where tiles are laid in a straight grid, with edges aligned. It’s clean, modern, and helps create a neutral backdrop, unless you choose a patterned or bold style tile. Because of its simplicity, this layout can make a small living room feel more open and less fussy. Just be sure that your subfloor is perfectly level and your walls are square, because with such a precise layout, any flaws will show.

Basket weave designs

Finally, the basket weave layout uses small rectangular tiles arranged to mimic the over-under pattern of a woven basket. It’s a bit more decorative, giving a vintage or Art Deco feel, especially when paired with contrasting grout. It’s best used in rooms where you want a bit of charm or character. Basket weave is ideal for mid-size living rooms where you want the floor to be interesting but not overpowering. It works well with neutral tones or soft pastels and pairs nicely with all design styles.
